Oddly-shaped & “Unusable”

Crawford Partnership, a London-based architecture and interiors firm, has completed Snowden House I & II. What makes these two residences so unique? …Both make use of nearly “unusable” and oddly-shaped plots of land near tall buildings. The houses uphold an ideal of sleek modern style and are built around the idea of vertical space, above and below ground, in order to maximize efficiency and amenities. The houses also reference traditional Middle Eastern “Windtower” courtyard dwellings, which are secure, internal, high-walled areas situated at the center of all living accommodations.

Scent-Vertising

With the Internet amassing marketing money once reserved for the newspapers, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today think making a stink will improve the bottom line. The two publications plan to test scented ads to bolster print ad revenue. The two papers are working with a company called Scentisphere, which sells a product called Rub’nSmell.
Unlike the scratch-and-sniff technology that has been around for some 30 years, (remember the stickers we collected as kids), Rub’nSmell represents a significant advance because it can be applied directly to printed ads as an ink, says Bob Bernstein, president of Scentisphere. No separate print run to create scented inserts is required.

“Lower My Bills” drives me nuts

Lower My Bills

This post is nothing more that a cry for help..for empathy. Have you seen the “Lower My Bills” tile ads. These ads are everywhere! As pervasive as the Giggle IQ test. You’ve seen the newest one right…the silhouetted dancing guy in a suit shaking his hips like Elvis. They are built in Flash. They are awful, ugly, poorly designed from a purely aesthetic perspective…they are today’s “Punch the Monkey” ad.

And, importantly, they exist because of credit card debt since they are selling dept consolidation. Is there any way we can clean up our web world of these kinds of eyesores? (The correct answer is: no.) And beyond the topic of design, the savings rate in the USA is negative. Yes, Americans spend more than they save. I guess that’s what trickle down economics means.

Silence, 2005, oil on canvas, 36″x31″ by Jordon Schranz

The exciting group exhibition, “The Sheltering Sky” opens today at the Black and White Gallery in Chelsea.

Presenting emerging artists working in a variety of mediums: photography, painting, video and installation. At the core of the exhibition: investigating the everyday life disconnect between the external environment and our thoughts, dreams, attitudes and feelings. The exhibition title, The Sheltering Sky appropriates a title of the cult classic book by Paul Bowles, a complex tale from which while one emerges as if from a dream, a little reflection makes it clear that our dreams can so easily become our nightmares.

THIS YEAR MARKS THE TAXI’S CENTENNIAL

Author of this post: Anjula Duggal | About Blog Authors »

This year marks the taxi cab’s 100th Anniversary. To celebrate the joyous occasion, the Design Trust for Public Space asked the city’s top designers to do some “creative-reinventive” thinking about the taxi. The results will be exhibited at the Auto Show in April.

Can’t wait till Spring? Not to worry. This Thursday, at 6:30pm, Cooper-Hewitt will be hosting “Transforming an Icon,” a panel discussion focusing on how some of the these designers met the challenge. ($10 to get in).
