This is probably one of the greatest challenges of any graphic design artist, or any artist for that matter who offers services - keeping the focus on the audience. Something that may help to keep self-expression out of commercial projects is by keeping your own creations handy for whenever you feel the urge to throw in your own creative ideas. On the other hand, every designer has their own set of specialties, such as a unique eye or humorous perspective. Advertising your unmatched niche (self-expression, in a way) helps you to better market your own services to clients looking for your specific talent.

I understand Micek, I've been there. Some environments dictate canned solutions. This is the ideal.

Great article. I was guilty of using the same basic design over and over again at my last job.

My problem was that my client (boss) only liked one style of design, and all the sites I created had the same basic purposes.

Well spoken article. Discipline is one of the qualities that every designer must have. It separates the amateurs from the pros. You can have the world of technical application knowledge and also the world of talent, but with out discipline is the design process you'll only make the process harder. The right and proper use of one's knowledge and understanding will yield great results in the field of art and design. Being able to assess situations and articulate concepts and execution techniques is critical in progress and development as a professional. Learning the place and time for things will do a designer a world of good.

Some good tips for starting freelancers :) is there in your university also some sort of marketplace where we can search for new talent? It would be great to co-operate on our website with fresh talents that brings in ideas around design and usability from a more international perspective.
