Used to be, planning the HOW Design Conference involved choosing a site and inviting a handful of speakers. Now, there’s way more to it. Oddly, I’m always amazed and even a little overwhelmed when I see the final conference program, with not only the lineup of sessions that we’ve developed but all the other stuff that’s going on during the event.

Over the years, we’ve added more and more activities to help designers get the most out of their four days at the conference, to the point where some folks cry “uncle!” and kvetch that there’s too much to choose from. (Sorry about that.) To help designers prioritize, I’ll share my list of must-dos in Boston:

• Studio Tours. I’ll admit it: I’ve never been on a tour. But it’s the one thing that people buzz about when they gather for the opening session.

• The Networking Lunch (Sunday, noon). This year, it’s hosted by one of HOW’s BFFs, Steve Gordon.

• Smashing Photography workshop (Sunday, 2 p.m.). This is the third year we’re bringing popular HOW Books author Jim Krause (of the Index series [http://www.fwbookstore.com/product/1620/164]) for a workshop that teaches you how to shoot and use your own “stock” photography.

• Design Evangelist session (Monday, 6 p.m.). This bonus session came about in part thanks to an article in HOW’s Business Annual about smart and savvy design for the Christian audience.

• The HOW Learning Center. These sponsored sessions will go on throughout the conference, so designers can pick up some new tricks for working in Flash, learn how to manage fonts and discover new printing techniques.

You’ll find a list of all the sessions and extra events here. It’s long. Sorry about that.
