The French have a knack for putting on glamorous and festive cultural events, so it only makes sense that right after the Cannes Festival, the poster gets its own star turn.
The 19th International Poster and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont, is an inspired and inspiring multi-show exhibition that aims to bring professionals, students and the general public together in celebration of posters and the designers who make them.
The venue is the beautiful Chateau Chaumont (located a couple of hours outside of Paris) and its lush grounds, but the exhibitions also spill over to the streets of the neighboring little town as well as the railway station.
Some of the highlights of the festival includes a tribute to the Swiss graphic designer Josef Müller-Brockmann, one of the forefathers of typography and layout; a group show exploring the contemporary graphic design scene in Zurich; an installation by French graphic designer Paul Cox based on the novel “The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman” by Laurence Sterne, and the presentation of the winners of the 2008 International Poster Competition. There will also be a student workshop that focuses on the images of gender relations in media.
The exhibition is on view until July 6, which means that it also coincides with the Chateau’s spectacular garden design festival that takes place in June. So if you’re planning a trip to Paris in the next month, make sure you don’t miss this multi-sensory extravaganza, which will tank you up with inspiration for the whole year.
