Making The Old New Again

Since it’s Friday, and because New York Fashion Week starts a week from today, we’re going to bring a little glamour into today’s post and take a look at the redesign of Interview magazine. Andy Warhol’s old pop culture bible has gotten a facelift recently by Fabien Baron, fashion’s absolutely most fabulous graphic designer, whose spare and elegant aesthetic has packaged beautiful blockbusters from CK perfume bottles to Madonna’s ‘Sex’ book.

Baron’s redesign of Harper’s Bazaar in 1992

Baron’s revamp of Interview sort of soft launched a few months ago already, but the September issue (which is also the fashion issue) is the first full-fledged example of Baron’s new vision. Which is kind of interesting, because the most striking thing about it is how new it isn’t. The cover features Kate Moss who strikes a retro pose as Brigitte Bardot (for the umpteenth time) by way of Cat Woman. The inside pages, which feature Baron’s signature font blocks and black and white minimalism, look a lot like his work at French Vogue and Arena Homme +. But all this is perfectly fine. Fashion is funny that way. It’s the most amnesiac of the creative industries. Recycling familiar images is as normal and appreciated as a DJ playing 80s hits at a high school reunion. Hence, Interview is having a major early 90s moment, with the aforementioned Kate Moss cover, an interview with the grunge era’s biggest fashion hero Martin Margiela (the first in 10 years) and a fashion editorial with Christy Turlington. However, just like the former supermodels on its pages, the magazine’s not so new re-design is still beautiful, elegant and chic. The question is, however, is it old enough to look new to a young generation?
