very interesting topic.
i am working with a product development company as an Industrial designer for 2 years. the paid is good, as well the work environmet, although i want to start my own business as a part time job while i get track and insure work volume to it. about getting started as a small business company what are the steps to achive recognition in the chamber of commerce?

You’ve listed a great list of the risks and rewards. I am on the flip side of your situation - after decades in the “9-5″ corporate world I’ve taken the plunge and started a home-based business. It wasn’t a decision I came to lightly, and my husband and I discussed it for sometime and did some budgeting first. But so far I absolutely love it, best decision I could have made at this time in my life.

I am all for working for ourselves and I too have made the jump. It’s like a process and took a few years of working at night and weekends while holding down the day job, but it was well worth it.

I think with the help of the internet and paypal being an inexpensive way to make a website e-commerce and sell your services as a web designer, graphic designer, illustrator, etc., you can greatly increase your changes of success, while working your neighborhood for work, too. Use the internet with a website… as it can help you to succeed.

Great post and insight for anyone wanting to go alone versus working for a company.

There are risks in both, and thanks for sharing your life “work” cycle with us. The more information one can have about the pro’s and con’s of being an independent employee or owning your own business, the better.

The rude awakening really sucks when you don’t know about that certain tax bill until it shows up!

Great post. I’m asking the same questions to my self at the moment. There are so many risks but the rewards are worth it. I dont have any kids or a mortgage but I guess starting a business means putting those things on hold. My field is Internet Marketing rather than design.
